Warlord: Saga of the Storm returns for its 20th anniversary! The legendary collectible card game of d20 combat, Warlord had a long history with many players still active in tournaments and leagues to this day. Warlord is a long-time favorite of many at AEG, and they didn’t want the 20th Anniversary of the classic game to pass without a tribute.

In the days of the CCG, Warlord was unique in its “Challenge System” which allowed players to take on rare and powerful enemies at special events. The most coveted of these were the Medusan Lords, completely unique cards that represented the creators’ own role-playing game characters. Defy the odds and defeat one and the player claimed it as their own.

In this special 20th Anniversary pack, AEG looks back at the origins of the Medusan Lords, when they were simple Warlords. This will allow everyone to build all-new decks using these characters! And included are items related to each, a new challenge Overlord, and a new alternate-art of the always useful Brine Fiend!

How to Get It

  • The only way to make sure you get a copy is to pre-order February 1 through February 5, 2021 at alderacstore.com.
  • Orders will be accepted through those dates.
  • Each account may order up to 10 copies.

Smash Up: Marvel

The Op has released Smash Up: Marvel bringing the comic world to the popular tabletop game. Listened from AEG, the game has players choosing two decks of fan-favorite characters and combining their powers to attempt to dominate their opponent.

The game centers around locations called Bases that have a “breakpoint”. When the limit is breached, each player earns Victory points accoring to their ranking in first, second, and third place. The first player to 15 total points wins the game.

You can choose from eight factions each with a different playing style. The game is perfect for long-time Smash Up fans and new players.

You can choose from:

  • The Ultimates: The cosmic themed faction that has the likes of Captain Marvel and Spectrum moves quickly from one base to another, allowing its member to attack from afar.
  • The Avengers: Six well-known and loved characters including Iron Man and Hulk have robust powers that are enhanced by items that were made just for them, creating impactful results.
  • Spider-Verse: Moving with spectacular speed is this deck’s forte, which means a quick response and special actions that boost the power of its stealthy arachnid characters.
  • S.H.I.E.L.D.: These highly-skilled agents infiltrate the battlefield with intensely honed team effort.
  • Masters of Evil: Diabolical members like Baron Zemo are built to become more aggressive as the game goes on, claiming more points through their nefarious plots.
  • The Kree: Otherworldly and steadfast, their leader The Supreme Intelligence is able to add power to the other members of this militaristic faction.
  • Hydra: If one member falls, two can take its place, resulting in intentional sacrifices that evildoers Arnim Zola and Red Skull will have no problem putting into effect.
  • The Sinister Six: The city is at this group’s mercy as they have base modifiers that lower breakpoints and allow characters like Doctor Octopus to grab up Victory points as he pleases.

The collection is a stand-alone game, but the 160 faction cards are also compatible with all Smash Up games, which have grown to include over 50 other factions, providing the ultimate crossover experience.

AEG Announces a Dead Reckoning Kickstarter this Summer

AEG has announced they’ll be launched Dead Reckoning on Kickstarter this summer.

This exciting new card crafting game from the master of card crafting, John D Clair, puts you at the helm of your own pirate ship, exploring the dangerous and unknown seas.  Using the unique card crafting mechanic, players will upgrade their ships and crew, find treasure, fight enemies, and even each other.

Dead Reckoning is described as “an experience like no other,” so be sure to sign up to be notified of the launch!

Fantasy Flight Nabs Legends of the Five Rings from AEG

Fantasy Flight GamesWe didn’t see this one comic. Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) and Fantasy Flight Games have come to a deal where Fantasy Flight will purchase Legend of the Five Rings from AEG.

L5R has been a popular game for two decades, and their events at Gen Con are always packed, so the deal is a bit of a shocker to me. Fantasy Flight has said it expects its first product for the relaunch will be for Gen Con 2017, and the game will be a Living Card Game (LCG) instead of a collectible card game (CCG).

AEG has cited their focus on other things beyond the CCG as a reason for the deal. Fantasy Flight does have a history with the property, and I’d expect to see it in more than just an LCG.

The current incarnation of the Legend of the Five Rings CCG will be complete with the release of the Evil Portents expansion from AEG. After that release, the game will go on hiatus until FFG relaunches it.

For players unfamiliar with the LCG model, a Living Card Game offers regular, non-randomized releases that include full playsets of every card. In its new form, Legend of the Five Rings will use this release format, rather than “blind” boosters that contain randomly assigned rare, uncommon, and common cards. Instead of spending their time chasing hard-to-find cards, the LCG distribution model allows players to focus on building decks by buying a single expansion that includes a full playset of every card in that expansion.

This will also see significant design changes in the newest version, including a new mechanical design.

If I want to win our game, I first must guess your true name!

In Rumpelstiltskin, you and a friend take the roles of fey folk who have decided to engage in a name guessing contest. You must use your magical mischief to learn your opponent’s secret name while protecting your own!

Players take turns going back and forth. To take a turn, you play one card from your hand, perform its actions, and then put it in your discard pile. Then the next player takes their turn. Some cards let you try to win the game by guessing your opponent’s secret name. At that point you guess what your opponent’s secret name is (the card on the bottom of their deck). Your opponent may use a reaction, but then must tell you if you guessed right or wrong. If you guessed correctly, you win! If the card you guessed is not on the bottom of your opponent’s deck, play continues.
