Christian T. Petersen to Step Down as CEO of Asmodee North America Leading to a Shift in the Company

Long-time hobby games entrepreneur, designer, and industry veteran Christian T. Petersen has announced that he would be stepping down from his role as CEO of Asmodee North America at the end of 2018. Petersen, 46, founded Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) in 1995 and served as its CEO until FFG’s merger with Asmodee in 2014, at which time he moved into his current role.

In the press announcement Petersen said:

After nearly twenty years with FFG and four years with Asmodee, I’ve seen our market go through tremendous change and amazing growth. Tabletop games have been accepted into the fabric of society and represented in pop-culture more positively than anyone could have hoped for when I joined the industry. I feel fortunate to have experienced this phenomenon first-hand, and to have been part of such an incredible journey.

Now it’s time to hand the reins to a new generation of leaders who along with the amazing staff at Asmodee North America and its studios (Catan, Days of Wonder, FFG, Heidelbär, Plaid Hat, and Z-Man), will move forward with their own unique energy and vision. I have no doubt that they’ll be better, burn brighter, and achieve ever more fantastic things. I can’t wait to see what they’ll do, and to play what they’ll make.

The games to be released from our U.S. studios over the next 6-12 months, represent the final game products in which I have played a part. I could not have hoped for a more innovative, more commercially exciting, or more satisfying finale.

I leave to focus on family, health, and the pursuit of other interests. My departure has been long-planned with the Asmodee Group CEO, and my friend, Stephane Carville.

I’m proud to leave Asmodee North America in extraordinarily capable hands. I’ll always be grateful to my terrific colleagues and business partners over the years, and most especially to the players. I could not have done it without you, but I’m sure you can do it without me.

During his tenure, Petersen provided vision, guidance, and creative input on hundreds of game titles, and was the lead designer on several popular games, including Twilight Imperium and A Game of Thrones: The Board Game. As a business leader, Petersen was among the first to pioneer international co-manufacturing of U.S. tabletop games, and forged successful alliances, partnerships, and licensing relationships with a wide array of persons and organizations.

As Petersen exits his role, Asmodee North America will transition into two distinct business units: Asmodee North America Publishing led by Steve Horvath, and Asmodee North America Distribution led by Andre Kieren.

Asmodee Roles the Dice on Digital as Carcassone Heads to Nintendo Switch

Board games are a booming business and it should be no surprise that board game publishers are trying to get a piece of the digital by porting over games to popular platforms.

Asmodee Digital has announced that they will be publishing digital versions of their board games on the Nintendo Switch and will be starting with the tile-laying board game Carcassone. The game is already available for Android, PC, and Mac.

In the game players take turns laying tiles and determining where to place their meeples to score points.

The game is expected to be released in the winter of 2018.

Asmodee Digital has 50 people, mostly in Paris and California. The company is a subsidiary of Asmodee Group, which is mostly owned by private equity firm Eurazeo.

Rumor Mill: Asmodee Exploring a Sale

The board game publisher Asmodee Group is rumored to be exploring a sale. The potential sale could see the company valued at more than 1.5 billion euros/$1.7 billion. According to Reuters, Guyancourt, a French-based company, owned by private equity firm Eurazeo, has hired investment bankers to run the sale process. Eurazeo owns Asmodee.

The company generates 100 million euros/$119 million in 12-month earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. Eurazeo took over Asmodee in 2013 for 143 million euros and it is not uncommon for an investment firm to sell in hopes of making a profit.

Asmodee and Eurazeo has been aggressive bringing in new intellectual property and publishing studios. Asmodee includes Fantasy Flight Games, Days of Wonder, Asmodee Studio, Catan Studio, Z-Man Games, Plaid Hat Games, Lookout Games, and more. Their games include Catan, X-Wing, Flick Em Up, Ticket to Ride.

After Months of Speculation Mayfair Games’ Assets Acquired by Asmodee North America

We reported in November that Mayfair Games was looking like it’d be shut down and today comes the official announcement. As of today, the management team at Mayfair Games, Inc. has announced they are winding down game publishing.

In the announcement they said:

After 36 years, this was not an easy decision or one we took lightly, but it was necessary. Once we had come to this conclusion, we knew we had to find a good home for our games which is when we reached out to Asmodee.

The company has sold their games to Asmodee North America, who has acquired all the assets of Mayfair Games, Inc. This acquisition includes the product line for both Mayfair Games, Inc and Lookout Games, GmbH.

Moving forward, Mayfair product will continue to be available through previously established distribution channels including Alliance Game Distributors for all sales in the USA to the hobby market and with Esdevium Games now Asmodee UK for the UK market.

Asmodee Acquires Catan from Mayfair

mayfair-games-logoThis is a pretty interesting way to start off 2016 for the gaming industry. Mayfair Games (MGI) has announced that Asmodee has acquired the license for the English language publishing and sales of the popular board game Catan. From this, Catan Studio, Inc. has formed and becomes the newest creative unit in the Asmodee group. Mayfair Games will continue to do business as an independent company publishing both Mayfair and Lookout Games products.

Mayfair Games will assist Catan Studio, Inc. and Asmodee North America in the promotion of the Catan brand including but not limited to the continued coordination of the 2016 Catan tournament schedule, Catan Day 2016 and the 2016 Catan World Championship.

MGI continues to retain a controlling interest in Lookout GmbH and Mayfair GmbH, providing a wide range of games worldwide, and distribution to the European marketplace. These efforts will be expanded with a new focus on multi-language and international products.

MGI has also announced the acquisition of several Martin Wallace games as permanent additions to the Mayfair game library. Those titles include Steam, Aeroplanes, Automobile, Test of Fire and Clash of Wills.

Moving forward, all of MGI’s distributor and retailer terms will remain the same. MGI will also be continuing its exclusive agreement with Alliance for all sales in the USA to the hobby market and with Esdevium for the UK market. MGI will be reevaluating and making some adjustments to its distribution strategy in Canada.

Asmodee has been on a role lately. Fantasy Flight Games merged with the company after the company had already acquired Days of Wonder. The company has also shifted how it distributes games causing mixed reactions. This latest acquisition further consolidates the industry around a few major publishers.

Mayfair had also recently done a rebranding of Catan updating the design of the packaging and creating a more universal look.

Fantasy Flight Games Merges with Asmodee

Asmodee-DOYAsmodee is gobbling up the game industry. The company has announced it will be merging with juggernaut Fantasy Flight Games. This is the second acquisition for Asmodee in six month. The company earlier this year acquired Days of Wonder.

Fantasy Flight Games brings a solid list of licensed games including Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and Sid Meier’s Civilization, and Games Workshop’s various worlds. It also helps Asmodee get a further foothold into North America, as Fantasy Flight has a great infrastructure with which they can build.

In return, Fantasy Flight gets better access and distribution in Europe. Asmodee oversees has distribution companies in the UK, Germany and the Benelux countries. They also act as a distributor for other brands not their own in various European countries.

FFG-Logo-BlueFantasy Flight Games will continue to operate as a fully independent publisher in the Asmodee Group out of its Roseville, MN headquarters and Fantasy Flight CEO Christian T. Petersen will continue in his current position, while also becoming a significant shareholder of the combined entity.

Most games will not be affected, though some games that are a better fit for Asmodee may shift over to them and vice versa.

Asmodee Gets a Ticket to Ride

Asmodee-DOYThis is news you might have expected to be announced at Gen Con, but a little over a week since the convention has ended it has been announced that Asmodee has acquired Days of Wonder in a merger. Days of Wonder will now be a wholly owned subsidiary of Asmodee.

That means Asmodee will now be adding to their line of games hits such as Ticket to Ride and Small World. This gives Asmodee a bigger presence in the U.S. game market as well as Days of Wonder’s digital game expertise. The company has found massive success with their Ticket to Ride app.

Asmodee’s North American and European operations are quite different. In North America, the company is the publisher for it’s own games. In Europe, the company owns distribution companies and sells more than just its own games.
