SDCC 2023: The Massive-Verse is coming to Solis Game Studio’s Pocket Paragons game system

Solis Game Studio and the Image ComicsMassive-Verse announced at San Diego Comic-Con International that the publisher’s most exciting superheroes – Radiant Black, Rogue Sun, Inferno Girl, and The Dead Lucky – will be brought to life in a card game utilizing Solis’ Pocket Paragons game system.

The Massive-Verse Card Game release will feature individual character decks for each of the four lead heroes, as well as character decks for each of their most fearsome rivals – <001>, Cataclysm, The Griffin, and Pyre – allowing for fast, thrilling battles between the heroes and villains… or even between heroes and heroes, or villains and villains. Plus, thanks to the universal compatibility of the Pocket Paragons systems, players will be able to match-up Massive-Verse characters against characters from other Pocket Paragons sets.

Pocket Paragon sets are designed with portability and speed in mind – with pocket-sized decks, and a dramatic game system that packs stunning highs and crushing defeats into epic duels that can wrap up in mere minutes. The Massive-Verse Pocket Paragons set will feature box art and character card art by artist Dan Mora, as well as ability card art from each character’s comic series.

It will launch with a Kickstarter later this year, before hitting retail by summer 2024. Follow the project here on Kickstarter.

Mike Grell’s Shaman’s Tears is getting a Roleplaying Card Game

Shaman's Tears

The Mike Grell Universe is coming back in a big way: on the heels of the announcement of a scripted audio fiction podcast adapting and continuing the original 1990’s Image Comics series, creator Grell and Pocket Universe Productions (PUP) will partner with Zombie Orpheus Entertainment to develop and produce a Shaman’s Tears RPG Card Game. The game and fiction podcast will be funded simultaneously through a forthcoming pair of crowdfunding campaigns in late summer and fall, with both product and production to be released in the first half of 2024.

Shaman’s Tears dealt with issues of identity, heritage, and the environment. Joshua Brand, the son of a Lakota father and an Irish mother, returns to the reservation he ran from as a young man, only to discover that he has been chosen to bear the mantle of protector of the Earth itself when he inherits the powers of all animals as the spiritual avenger Stalking Wolf. Soon after Brand finds himself at odds with a rogue scientific organization usurping nature with human/animal hybrids known as The Blood, their experiments hitting closer to home in ways he never imagined.

The RPG card game inspired by the series allows players to take on the roles of either the heroes or villains from the original Shaman’s Tears run with each character having unique characteristics that can help or hinder them in a game where survival is paramount. As animals and the environment are key elements in the series, players can use the abilities of animal totems and ecological crises as both protection and the means to attack.

An “early bird” campaign – managed by Zombie Orpheus Entertainment with Mike Grell and PUP working in tandem at the heart of it – will allow gamers and Grell fans alike to pre-order not just the game, but also a special surprise booster pack, limited edition playmats, and acrylic stands. Both campaigns will feature perks applicable to both the game and the audio drama, including digital downloads and CD’s of the complete first season, a Kickstarter-only game box, a retail tier for game stores, script books, prints drawn by Mike, and even an extremely limited edition Shaman’s Tears leather jacket for the most generous supporters.

Rat Queens: the Board Game is Coming to Kickstarter from Deep Water Games this Summer

Rat Queens: The Board Game

Deep Water Games is adapting the New York Times Best-Selling comic series Rat Queens into an official board game, coming to Kickstarter this Summer.

You know the Rat Queens. A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, in the business of massacring monsters for money. When the darkly comedic sass-and-sorcery comic debuted in 2013, it put a “Bridesmaids” spin on “Dungeons and Dragons” and campaigned its way into the hearts of many. Now, it’s your turn to join the Queens on their ale-swigging misadventures in Rat Queens: The Board Game.

Rat Queens: The Board Game is a cooperative deck-building boss-fighter based on the award-winning Image Comics series Rat Queens, created by Kurtis Wiebe. It plays 1 to 4 players in under an hour with learn-as-you-go mechanics and loads of content for endless replayability.

Just like the comics, players will have to manage the relationships between the queens and suffer the consequences of their chaotic actions. Unique asymmetric powers immerse players in the role of each of the four Queens:

  • Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, a black-haired necromancer with a bad attitude and a mysterious past.
  • Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, a red-haired Dwarf of the Blackforge Clan who rejects her family’s old-fashioned traditions.
  • Dee the Atheist Human Cleric, a human ex-high priestess who left her faith and family after she became disillusioned with the horrors they worshipped.
  • Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief, a lover and a fighter who is as dangerous as she is small.

Rat Queens: the Board Game is designed by Erica Hayes-Bouyouris and Sen-Foong Lim. Bouyouris is a game designer from Toronto, Canada, whose previous works include the Steven Universe Miniatures Game, Bosk, and Kodama 3-D. She’s part of the Game Artisans of Canada and co-hosts the Meeple Syrup show with Lim.

Lim is one half of the Bamboozle Brothers; the designers of award-winning games such as Belfort and Junk Art. Sen’s previous games also include Kingdom Rush, Legend of Korra, Godfather, and Mind MGMT.
