The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31

The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 was a hot game for a while. Released by Mondo, the game was popular, selling out and commanding high prices in the aftermarket. A lack of reprints, and really any news, of the game, was head-scratching, as the game was a hit and featured a lot of buzz from its Gen Con debut years back. Now, Mondo and The OP have announced that The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 is back and available for pre-order!

In the game, you relive the 1982 classic John Carpenter horror movie, The Thing, with this social deduction, hidden identity tabletop board game.

To win the game, players must complete missions, locate and identify the imitations, and escape the Outpost. Your ability to uncover the truth is critical to discover the imitations and win the game.

Play as 1 of 12 iconic characters (and as either a human or an imitation) from the movie, such as MacReady, Palmer, and Blair. The game is for 4 to 8 players and one we highly recommend.

Designed by The OP with art by Phantom City Creative, The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 retails for $60 and is expected to ship in November 2021.

A Gentle Rain

Take a deep breath, and relax… Mondo Games has announced A Gentle Rain, a meditative solo or cooperative strategy game designed to instill calm and tranquility. A visually beautiful game, this little box of calm is simple to understand, yet hard to master.

First created as a holiday gift for friends and family, A Gentle Rain was designed by acclaimed game designer Kevin Wilson to create a feeling of calm during the often stressful holiday season. The game was a hit, with many recipients still playing the game years later due to its simplicity, portability, and the soothing and compelling game ritual.

A contemplative solo or cooperative game, the goal of A Gentle Rain is to place game tiles in such a way that reveals eight types of blooming lilies before your tiles run out. Each new tile drawn is placed next to a tile already in play, making sure to match the colors of all the tile edges touching the newly played tile. With each complete square of four touching tiles, a blossom appears between them and a point is scored.

A Gentle Rain includes 28 tiles and 8 wooden tokens featuring art by Chris Bilheimer and is conveniently sized to travel anywhere. A Gentle Rain retails for $22 and is shipping now from MondoShop.com and will be available in retail stores nationwide beginning next month.

Little Red Riding Hood vs. Beowulf is a stand alone expansion for the Unmatched system and includes:

Fish Kill side ad

Mondo and Restoration Games have teamed up with Marvel to create several additions to their Unmatched line of miniatures dueling tabletop games planned for release beginning in the summer of 2021. Four new sets have been announced:

  • Redemption Row – featuring Luke Cage, Ghost Rider, and Moon Knight
  • Hell’s Kitchen – featuring Daredevil, Elektra, and Bullseye
  • Teen Spirit – featuring Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, and Cloak and Dagger
  • For King and Country – featuring Black Widow, Black Panther, and Winter Soldier

Unmatched veteran artists Heather Vaughan, Oliver Barrett, and Ian O’Toole will be joined by Matt Taylor and Sanford Greene as the key illustrators for the line. The combined weight of their contributions to the worlds of gaming, comics, and entertainment is staggering; fans can expect each standalone title to be as visually impactful as they are mechanically sound.

Since debuting at Gen Con in August of 2019, Unmatched has released seven titles featuring 19 heroes sourced from myth, literature, television, and movies – presenting players with nearly two hundred possible 2-player battle scenarios. The upcoming Marvel editions will offer 66 possible in-world combat pairings and will feature unique gameplay additions building off the core game ruleset.

Update: Read the official announcement with product images.

While specifics haven’t been released or announced, it looks like the next expansion for Unmatched has Little Red Riding Hood taking on Beowulf.

Unmatched is Restoration Games and Mondo Games miniature board game where you can pit various characters against each other. Characters released have included Robin Hood, Medussa, Big Foot, the Invisible Man, Sherlock and more. Expansions have been released featuring Bruce Lee and Jurassic Park with the latest being Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yes, Buffy can fight it out with Bruce Lee or Raptors! Six releases have come out for the game so far.

Little is known about the upcoming expansion but based on its title, I think we know who’ll be included. Two figure expansions have retailed for $25 in the past which is what this is listed for on sites such as Gamer Nerdz.
