Rat Queens: The Board Game

Deep Water Games is adapting the New York Times Best-Selling comic series Rat Queens into an official board game, coming to Kickstarter this Summer.

You know the Rat Queens. A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, in the business of massacring monsters for money. When the darkly comedic sass-and-sorcery comic debuted in 2013, it put a “Bridesmaids” spin on “Dungeons and Dragons” and campaigned its way into the hearts of many. Now, it’s your turn to join the Queens on their ale-swigging misadventures in Rat Queens: The Board Game.

Rat Queens: The Board Game is a cooperative deck-building boss-fighter based on the award-winning Image Comics series Rat Queens, created by Kurtis Wiebe. It plays 1 to 4 players in under an hour with learn-as-you-go mechanics and loads of content for endless replayability.

Just like the comics, players will have to manage the relationships between the queens and suffer the consequences of their chaotic actions. Unique asymmetric powers immerse players in the role of each of the four Queens:

  • Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, a black-haired necromancer with a bad attitude and a mysterious past.
  • Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, a red-haired Dwarf of the Blackforge Clan who rejects her family’s old-fashioned traditions.
  • Dee the Atheist Human Cleric, a human ex-high priestess who left her faith and family after she became disillusioned with the horrors they worshipped.
  • Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief, a lover and a fighter who is as dangerous as she is small.

Rat Queens: the Board Game is designed by Erica Hayes-Bouyouris and Sen-Foong Lim. Bouyouris is a game designer from Toronto, Canada, whose previous works include the Steven Universe Miniatures Game, Bosk, and Kodama 3-D. She’s part of the Game Artisans of Canada and co-hosts the Meeple Syrup show with Lim.

Lim is one half of the Bamboozle Brothers; the designers of award-winning games such as Belfort and Junk Art. Sen’s previous games also include Kingdom Rush, Legend of Korra, Godfather, and Mind MGMT.

Maple Games Announces a Licensed Board Game Based on Mind MGMT

Maple Games has announced that they are making a game based on the comic series MIND MGMT created by Matt Kindt and published by Dark Horse. The game will be designed by Sen-Foong Lim and Jay Cormier.

The game has been in the designing phase for some time and while details are limited, this is one that’s really intriguing due to the source material.

MIND MGMT began being published in 2012 and is about a true crime writer named Meru who begins a search about a mysterious flight and discovers a secret government agency of spies, espionage, and psychic abilities. The comic was also optioned as a movie by 20th Century Fox in December of 2012 with Ridley Scott and David J. Kelly beginning pre-production in January 2013 and a television adaptation was announced in 2017.

The Legend of Korra: Pro-bending Arena is a brand new board game set in the Avatar universe from Nickelodeon’s global smash hit Avatar: The Legend of Korra. A miniatures board game designed by Sen Foong-Lim and Jessey Wright, The Legend of Korra: Pro-bending Arena pits 2 players against each other in a sports game that features deep, strategic, head-to-head gameplay, highly detailed and dynamic miniatures, deck crafting and building, and team customization. Being published by IDW Games, the board game is available now through Kickstarter.

The game play of The Legend of Korra: Pro-bending Arena is closely modeled after the popular Pro-bending sport featured in the first season of Avatar: The Legend of Korra. As such, the game is designed for 2 players, each controlling a team of 3 benders: earth, fire, and water.

Based on the events of Avatar: The Legend of Korra, Pro-bending Arena focuses on the championship match between the fresh-faced Future Industry Fire Ferrets and the sneaky and brutal White Falls Wolfbats.

The objective of the game is simple: be on the other team’s side of the arena when the game ends and you will be victorious, or dominate the competition, pushing all their benders off the back of the arena to end the game immediately and claim the championship as yours!

Godfather: A New Don Coming This Summer

The Godfather A New DonControl the streets of New York and bring power to your family in this summer’s The Godfather: A New Don. Designed by Jay Cormier and Sen-Foong Lim, The Godfather: A New Don is a game for 3-6 players that sees each player taking control of one of the major mafia families, each trying to assert their power in the streets of 1950’s New York in hopes of taking the reigns as the new kingpin of the criminal world. The game is playable in approximately 45 minutes.

The Godfather: A New Don is an area control board game with unique dice mechanics. Each round players will roll their individual pools of dice and decide what area of the city they’ll want to focus on trying to capture. Meanwhile, the current Don will be able to make players an offer they can’t refuse and steal dice from their limited supply. Staying on top proves difficult as every stolen die moves other players up the ladder toward taking over as Don, so the tension rises with each shake of the dice. With multiple ways to use each dice you roll, players will never find themselves at the mercy of the die, instead they’ll use what they roll to make their opponents beg for mercy.
