Closer Look: The Mighty Thor Heroclix: Thor

Over the weekend we opened up and showed off (with some technical issues) a brick of the upcoming The Mighty Thor Heroclix set from WizKids. We’re kicking off a closer look at each of the figures we saw with some general thoughts on their gameplay and sculpt.

Up next is #1 in the set… Thor!

Sculpt: What would a set be without Thor (and there’s 5 depending how you count them in this set)!? The figure is #1 in the set kicking it off with a figure that hearkens back to his earliest of look and is about the 40th time the character has appeared in the game. This look is taken straight from the comics and is a solid translation.

While the face of the character suffers from the usual limitations of Heroclix figures, the cape, helmet, and hammer all have solid detailing to make up for it. From the bottom strap of the hammer to the winds coming off of the helmet and flow of the cape, it’s the small details that make this figure work.

The pose is a classic one and overall, while it’s not super dynamic, this is a Thor that’s a great translation of his comic depiction.

Card/Gameplay: At just 50 points this is the cheapest Thor in modern but it also has the lowest number of clicks for any Thor in modern. It’s cheap, but a lot, but also a few clicks short of others. The dial too is a bit slower and less attacks with a comparable strength and defense to others. It’s cheaper but its dial is just enough to see why. Still, this is still a pretty tough figure and has its useful.

What stands out is the Quake “Mjolnir Slam” which guarantees at least 1 damage. To get that in helps create a nice steady damage machine and for the cheap points a figure that might be a good fit for your Asgardian or Avengers team.

You can watch the video of the unboxing below (sorry about the audio issues).

The Avengers Revealed for Knight Model’s Marvel Universe Miniature Game

Today the Avengers have been revealed for Knight Model‘s upcoming tabletop game Marvel Universe Miniature Game. This comes the day after the Guardians of the Galaxy were revealed, and the X-Men preceded that. The game will be released with three starter sets, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, and Avengers, that will each included four metal miniatures, character cards, and a mini rulebook.

The Avengers are made up of Steve Rogers as Captain America, Tony Stark as Iron Man, Thor, and Natasha Romanova aka Black Widow. We don’t know who will be in the blister that will be released along with the starter set.

Each character’s description sounds like they embody their comic counterparts. Captain America is a leader who provides boosts to his teammates. His Vibranium Shield acts to help boost his defense and can be used offensively attacking multiple enemies as it bounces off of them in the air. Iron Man is all about the suit which allows him to fly with speed, his built in offensive repulsor blasts, missiles, and the Unibeam. Thor fills the role of the flying tank in his strength, and Mjolnir. He can also bring down lightning and like Cap, use his hammer as a shield. Finally Black Widow is about the stealth and close combat. It sounds like she has an infiltrate ability and uses close combat, firearms, and her Widow’s Bite to take on her opponents.

So, now that all three starter sets have been revealed, which will you be getting? I can’t decide, so I guess it’s all of them for me!

Gen Con 2012 – Review – Marvel Heroclix TabApp

With the official release, now seems to be a perfect time to go over my first hand experience with Wizkid’s Heroclix TabApp which blends the real and digital when it comes to the popular figure game. The first thing this game isn’t, a recreation of the table-top game on the iPad. That caught me off guard as the teasers leading up to it, lead me to believe that’s what I was checking out. Instead, what we have is a fun game aimed at a younger audience that uses Heroclix physical characters in combination with an app for the iPad. It’s a good bridge to get the younger set into the game.

With two sets, one featuring X-Men characters (Wolverine, Cyclops and Iceman) and the other being Marvel Super Heroes (Captain America, Iron Man and Thor), six figures total, each has a story over 15 maps and 30 enemies. The game is pretty simple. You put the figure on the screen and then enemies come at you forcing you to attack the enemies by tapping your finger. It took me two games to get it down, so it isn’t quite as simple as that.

It’s a fun solo experience, and with the figures usable in regular Heroclix games it’s a great way to get your young kid into the physical game. Cut scenes entertainingly introduce you to each level and threw a swipe of your finger, you’re able to use power-ups and special attacks. It’s fun and definitely has an audience in mind, ages 8 and up.

While the person I talked to was rather coy, there’s plans to expand and integrate DC characters. We can expect two sets, one based on The Dark Knight Rises and another general DC super hero set.

If your son or daughter constantly want to play with your Heroclix, but are too young, this is a great alternative to get them interested.
