Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar #5 (of 5)

Review: Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar #4 (of 5)

Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar #4

What does it take to be a Space Marine in the Warhammer 40,000 universe? Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar #4 answers that question in a comic that focuses more on the warrior’s growth than the battle currently waging. The series has been an interesting one doing a solid job of mixing two eras for its main character Marneus Calgar. Through his battles in the present, he reflects on what it took for him to become the leader he is today. And through the past, we get to see more of the world and his difficult journey.

In the past Tacitan, now Marneus, has helped defeat a Chaos cult and is going through the trails to join the ranks of the Ultramarines Space Marine chapter. writer Kieron Gillen does an excellent job showing how difficult a task it is as the bodies pile up and Marneus goes through a torturous transformation. It’s been years since I read up on all of the specifics of the augments that go into being a Space Marine, but Gillen takes us step-by-step. It feels like an update to the rather dry spec-readouts I remember reading as a fan of the Warhammer 40K miniature game. Organs are added and training is done and through it all we get to see Marneus grow, literally.

Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar #4 does an impressive job of taking what has been told so many times before and making it interesting. There’s been a lot written as to the various upgrades in Space Marines but Gillen breaks it down as to what those upgrades are, when they’re given, why they’re given, and what the gains are. He does that through Marneus’ training in the field. For new readers, some of it might be surprising as things like acid spit and the ability to gain memories through the consumption of others are presented. And it all just flows without a hint of silliness.

In the present, Marneus battles the Chaos forces. The blood flows with somewhat comedic effect. The art by Jacen Burrows works well this issue delivering an over the top experience. The training scenes, especially towards the beginning are full of chaos at times as the numbers dwindle due to death. The present battle we see heads up and bodies crushed under tanks. Whether it’s meant as a comedic spin, I don’t know. But, it’s over the top and hard to not enjoy it in that way. Java Tartaglia‘s colors deliver some of the fun in rather bright colors and Clayton Cowles‘ lettering the right touch for the calls of Chaos warriors.

Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar #4 is a fun comic that feels like a nice updated take on a “field guide”. We get to see what it takes to be a Space Marine step by step. And we get a lot action in both the past and present. It works really well to educate people about this new new world and property and entertain at the same time.

Games Workshop Reveals a Scinari Cathallar a Lumineth Realm-lord

During their third online preview, Games Workshop revealed Scinari Cathallar, a new figure for the upcoming Lumineth army.

The Scinari Cathallar plays a vital role in Lumineth society. Lumineth use aetherquartz which gives them enlightenment of mind, body and spirit. It has a price though. The Aelves pay by siphoning their turbulent emotions into the aetherquartz.

In battle, Scinari Cathallars weaponise this emotion, drawing it from their allies and turning it against their enemies. Foes are rendered helpless by the overwhelming rush of despair and darkness.

The Lumineth are the reworked classic High Elves army from Warhammer, updated with new units and all-new sculpts and characters.

The Sons of Behemat are Coming to Age of Sigmaer

We got a hint during the last Games Workshop preview, but now we get our first look at the Sons of Behemat.

The giant army will feature Warhammer‘s “biggest plastic monster yet” with lots of details and trinkets from across the various factions and bits of monster.

Sons of Behemat is a brand-new army for Warhammer Age of Sigmar and is entirely made of gargants.

The classic Aleguzzler Gargant and three Mega-gargant variants – Gatebreaker, Warstomper and Kraken-eater – make for an army that’s small on model count and big in every other way – especially the carnage they can cause!

They’re also not just an army on their own, they can also be an ally to every single Age of Sigmar faction.

Games Workshop Returns to Comics with Marvel

Games Workshop

Games Workshop has had a spotty history with comics with runs that come and go and rotate publishers. Comics based on GW properties are returning as the company is teaming up with Marvel for a whole new era. Details as far as properties and what creative teams have not been announced.

This isn’t the first time GW properties have wound up in Marvel comics, though previously it wasn’t so legal.

GW, with popular games like Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, and more, has deep and rich game fluff ripe for use in greater media. The game publisher is considered to have untapped potential which is finally getting the spotlight. On top of the comic announcement, a television show has been announced based on one of the characters from Warhammer 40k.

Comics began being published through Black Library, some of which were award-winning. BOOM! Studios picked up the license in 2006 and lost it about mid-2009. Titan Comics began publishing comics in 2016 which ended in 2018.

New comics come to shelves autumn 2020.

Rule the Stronghold in Warhammer: Age of Sigmar: The Rise and Fall of Anvalor—Coming Soon!

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar: The Rise and Fall of Anvalor

This April, WizKids releases The Rise and Fall of Anvalor, the co-opetition game taking place in the iconic Warhammer: Age of Sigmar setting, is coming soon!

Long-warring factions have put their quarrels aside, endeavoring to build a stronghold, called Anvalor, on The Great Parch. But each faction also has ulterior motives—they seek to take the stronghold under their control in order to strengthen their influence in all the Mortal Realms.

One to four players will select of one of six factions, including Order Serpentis, The Dispossessed, and Anvils of Heldenhammer, as well as one of their factions’ unique Aspects, abilities that can provide unique advantages during gameplay. Players build the stronghold by purchasing City Buildings, which will grant the player Influence; however, as soon as a City Building has been purchased, enemies will start to gather. When a turn ends with 3 enemies on the same side, they will assault, interrupting gameplay until the attack is completed. Players defeat enemies by rolling dice to either perform a Ranged or Melee attack, depending on the ability of the attacking unit. Upon defeating an enemy, the victorious player will gain Influence.

The game ends when the last enemy tile has been placed on the board. After a Final Assault, players will count the influence they’ve collected throughout the game. The player with the most influence wins!

The Rise and Fall of Anvalor, designed by Rustan Hakansson, offers many different combinations of play: each faction has four Aspects to choose from and the three different enemies have four different difficulties. Add to this the ability to play solo, and The Rise and Fall of Anvalor will offer many hours of varied and challenging gameplay.
