Free Comic Book Day is a yearly event taking place at local comic shops where fans are able to get free comics and limited edition items. It takes place the first Saturday in May each year and in 2019 falls on Saturday, May 4, 2019!
In years past WizKids has released items for the day from their Heroclix and Dice Masters lines of games, each having deep roots in comics. This year sees two releases.
The PX Iron Man HeroClix: Free Comic Book Day Figure from Wizkids/NECA has an enhanced paint job and effects and will include an exclusive HeroClix figure and card in a polybag with hangtag. The PX Marvel Dice Masters Promo Starter Pack includes Marvel Dice Masters: Uncanny X-Men Dice-Building Game Starter Set and Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers – Age of Ultron Starter Set.
Games Workshop has revealed their newest licensed game from WizKids, the new board game set in the Age of Sigmar – The Rise & Fall of Anvalor. Here’s the story so far…
“Many previous attempts to build a lasting fortification at Anvalor have failed. Its strategic location on the Great Parch, a particularly arid region of Aqshy, the Realm of Fire, is of supreme importance. However, each new effort to establish a significant foothold has also irked a new foe, an enemy who rises to the challenge of thwarting the attempt. Equally distant from Anvilgard, Hammerhal Aqsha and the City of Brimstone, the competing factions of those great cities have put their quarrels aside and committed to a final push to rebuild Anvalor together. Whoever can secure the new stronghold will also dominate the Great Parch, significantly strengthening their influence in all the Mortal Realms.”
Warhammer Age of Sigmar: The Rise & Fall of Anvalor is for 1-4 player game with games lasting about one hour. Players compete to gather the most influence in Anvalor to dominate and cause the city’s downfall. The player with the most influence wins!
There are six playable factions, the famous Aqshian rivals, the Hammers of Sigmar and the Khornate legions of Khorgos Khul, the Vorstarg Fyreslayer Lodge and the Order Serpentis.
WizKids has announced that next year they’ll be sponsoring the ROC series! While many details remain to be worked out, the plan is that all maps released next year will be legal for HeroClix, that points earned under the ROC series can also be used for entry into WizKids Worlds and Nationals. The ROC Cup Championship will convert to a Worlds’ Qualifier event introducing new championship formats as players try to earn enough points to qualify for the WizKids World Championship.
Both sides hope that exclusive figures can also be made available through the series with more details to come!

WizKids has announced the upcoming card game, Maiden’s Quest, with design by Ken Shannon, who has brought you games such as Approaching Dawn: The Witching Hour and Tournament at Camelot. A fair maiden can only wait to be rescued for so long, and at some point, they just have to do it themselves.
Maidens who are escaping the tower will use cards in their hands to fight enemies and overcome various obstacles. As you play, the game’s difficulty grows as the number of enemies increases and they become more active. An innovative turn-and-flip mechanism allows each card to represent up to four items, encounters, or allies.
This fun and easy to learn game takes 10 to 30 minutes to play if you play non-stop. Or play one round at a time, which is only 30 seconds or less! Each encounter resolves separately, so you can stop and stow away the deck at any time, returning to play exactly where you left off. Also, the game is played solely in the hand, so no table space is required! Box contents include enough for true solo (1-player) play, co-op, or competitive 2-player games. With multiple copies, even more players can join in and be part of a large, multi-player experience!
Maiden’s Quest is expected to release June 2018 for $19.99.
Wizkids has announced the release of its card-based party game, Letter Go! Designed by Marcus Ross and Cara Ryan, three to six players write words on their white board using the available letter cards but score points only for the cards they are able to claim before their opponents!
Before play starts, everyone gets a white board, dry erase marker, and two consonants that they keep hidden from the other players. In the center of the table, vowels are displayed equal to the number of player. Also, numbered tokens, again equal to the number of players, are placed within reach. On the count of three, the 60-second egg timer is flipped, every player reveals their consonants, and the game begins! Write a word that’s four letters or more using the vowels in the center and your opponents’ letters, NOT your own!
Simply writing words down isn’t the only thing happening in this game. Every round, two Rule Cards are drawn, and they MUST be incorporated into your word! Will you have to write your word backwards? Maybe you’ll need to draw an eye whenever you write an “E”. You might even have to sign your name on your opponents’ white board! Each letter of the alphabet has two rules associated with it, so there are countless combination of crazy antics!
Write your word, complete the Rule Cards, then grab a scoring token! This determines who scores first once everyone is done with their word. The point value of each letter is indicated by the number of stars above it. The player that took the 1-token scores all the letters in their word. Vowels are worth nothing or -1, depending on the game variant you choose to play. Play continues for 5 rounds, and whoever has the most points at the end WINS!
Are you ready to enjoy some wacky word play? Then head over to your Friendly Local Game Store to pick up Letter Go! for $24.99 T-O-D-A-Y!
