Wizards of the Coast Takes on Depictions of Racism in Magic: The Gathering
Wizards of the Coast has made an announcement that they are taking a look at the cards from Magic: The Gathering for depictions of racism. They have announced numerous cards whose images will be removed from the database.
The company has announced they are changing the multiverse ID and removing the Gatherer card image for the card Invoke Prejudice which was originally released in 1994. The company has described the card as racist and there is no place for racism in the game, community, or anywhere.
The following cards will also have their images removed from the Magic database:
- Invoke Prejudice
- Stone-Throwing Devils
- Pradesh Gypsies
Instead a statement will be in place of the images:
- We have removed this card image from our database due to its racist depiction, text, or combination thereof. Racism in any form is unacceptable and has no place in our games, nor anywhere else.
Those cards will also be banned in all sanctioned tournament play.
They said there is more to come and this is just a first pass of cards. This is a good start for the company but there’s much work to do behind the scenes with hiring and more.
