Magnetic Press Announces Partnership for new Lupin The 3rd 50th Tabletop RPG and Anniversary Book

Lupin the 3rd

Magnetic Press has announced their partnership with TMS Entertainment to publish a line of products based on the world-popular anime series Lupin the 3rd, which celebrates its 50th Anniversary this October. Plans include a brand-new Tabletop Role-playing Game built on Magnetic’s new D6MV ruleset variation of the renowned D6 System of roleplaying rules made popular by licensing partner West End Games, and a deluxe retrospective coffee table book.

Created in the late 1960s by the celebrated mangaka Monkey Punch, TMS produced Lupin the 3rd, the first animated series which debuted on October 24, 1971 and has since spawned well over 250 serialized episodes and numerous animated feature films and original video animations (OVAs). It is most widely recognized for the 1978 feature film Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro which marked the directorial debut of Hayao Miyazaki. While the series has evolved over the decades, the energetic style and jazzy globetrotting adventures remain true to the heart of the property.

The tabletop role-playing game will give players an opportunity to participate in fast-paced adventures and master-thief heists set around the globe, with a unique open-world quest system filled with rewards and challenges reminiscent of both collectible card games and video game RPGs. The game will be published under Magnetic’s gaming imprint, Magnetic Press Play, and will utilize their unique “Magnetic Variant (D6MV)” ruleset built upon the classic D6 System made popular by West End Games with their original Star Wars and Ghostbusters RPGs. More details about the game will be revealed in October as part of the Anniversary celebration.

The Anniversary Coffee Table Book will spotlight the birth and evolution of the Lupin the 3rd franchise since its manga inception by the late Monkey Punch, with a comprehensive look at each episode, feature, and season produced by TMS Entertainment through the years. The book will also include a near-encyclopedic look at the central characters and supporting cast throughout the series, as well as various media adaptations and a gallery of artwork certain to entertain fans both old and new.

Carbon Grey, the Tabletop RPG Based on the Popular Graphic Novel Series, Launches on Kickstarter

Carbon Grey RPG

Magnetic Press Play, the new tabletop game imprint from publisher of graphic novels and art books Magnetic Press, today launched the Kickstarter for their first tabletop role-playing game — Carbon Grey. In the game, players will experience and explore a land similar to World War I-era Europe, featuring dieselpunk technologies and paranormal elements. Carbon Grey will use an updated and streamlined version of the renowned D6 System from West End Games, which offers accessible gameplay coupled with mechanical depth.

Carbon Grey is set in an alternate land reminiscent of World War I-era Europe, filled with fantastic dieselpunk technologies and elements of the paranormal. In the game, players will explore a war-torn universe filled with mystery, prophecy, and intrigue, taking the role of one of 24 character archetypes which they can customize with unique traits, skills, and talents. The sourcebook is being written and overseen by game designer and graphic novelist Andrew E.C. Gaska, an ENnie and UKGE award winner for his work on the recent Alien RPG from Free League and the lead writer of the Terminator RPG from Nightfall Games.

Built upon the classic D6 System developed by West End Games, the Carbon Grey role-playing game will be the first release to use the Magnetic Variant of the popular tabletop role-playing game rules (D6MV). The Magnetic Variant rewinds the D6 system back to its classic roots while streamlining it for a modern audience.

Rules variations unique to the Magnetic Variant of the system include Genre Defined Attributes, Streamlined Skills, and Character Quirks and Obligations. Space/time in Carbon Grey is bent — apply too much pressure, and it will snap — so a special Wild Die has been added to the formula representing this element of chaos to the game — chaos that can cause Continuity Surges, Flux Effects, and more.

The game is offered in two configurations: as a 224-page standalone Hardcover Core Rule Book, and as a complete Boxed Edition which adds 21 plastic miniatures, 140 character and item cards, a sturdy three-panel GM screen, 12 custom D6 dice, a large two-sided battle map, and multiple boards of punch-out map-modifying markers and tokens. Other offerings include the complete 300+page hardcover Carbon Grey Omnibus collecting the entire original comic series, remastered and re-edited to fit the newly re-defined game world. Retailer bundle tiers will also be available at discounted wholesale prices.

The campaign will also offer numerous ancillary add-ons, such as additional minis, dice, and other gameplay items, as well as various items of Carbon Grey merchandise. Many exciting stretch goals will be revealed throughout the campaign, such as new monster and mini types, gameplay expansion scenarios, and other significant enhancements to the gameplaying experience.

Magnetic Press launches a Tabletop Game Imprint, Magnetic Press Play

Magnetic Press Play

Graphic novel and art book publisher Magnetic Press has announced the formation of Magnetic Press Play, a new imprint focused on tabletop games and transmedia properties. The first project to launch under the company’s banner will be Carbon Grey, an original Tabletop Role-Playing Game based on the popular graphic novel series by Hoang Nguyen and originally published by Image Comics. Other projects in the works include games and supplements based on popular licenses such as Chaosium’s Call Of Cthulhu and several beloved anime series. More details on these, and additional projects, will be announced in the coming weeks.

West End Games

Magnetic’s first project under the new imprint is also the first to capitalize on their licensing partnership with the well-known game publishing house, West End Games, best known for their D6 System role-playing ruleset. This ruleset served as the core for several top-selling (and beloved to this day) licensed tabletop RPGs, including the original Star Wars and Ghostbusters RPGs, and will serve as the foundation of Carbon Grey’s gameplay mechanics.

Magnetic Press Play’s first title, Carbon Grey, sets players in a unique alternate history reminiscent of World War I-era Europe, but with fantastic dieselpunk technologies and elements of the paranormal. In the game, players will explore a war-torn universe filled with mystery, prophecy, and intrigue. The sourcebook is being written and overseen by game designer and graphic novelist Andrew E.C. Gaska, an ENnie and UKGE award winner for his work on the recent Alien RPG from Free League and the lead writer of the Terminator RPG from Nightfall Games.

Other titles coming from Magnetic Press Play include a series of expansions for Chaosium’s popular RPG Call of Cthulhu that will make use of Magnetic Press’s background in the graphic novel marketplace, as well as games based on various anime and manga licenses.
