Closer Look: The Mighty Thor Heroclix: Loki

Over the weekend we opened up and showed off (with some technical issues) a brick of the upcoming The Mighty Thor Heroclix set from WizKids. We’re kicking off a closer look at each of the figures we saw with some general thoughts on their gameplay and sculpt.

Up next is #2 in the set… Loki!

Sculpt: Loki has had some changes to his look over the recent years, but this miniature hearkens back to his earliest days when he was not just attacking Thor, but the newly formed Avengers. The figure does a solid  job with its simple yellow and green suit with subtly details for the actual costume, like the belt, and good muscle sculpting.

The horns on the head are particularly nice with little issues (unlike common problems with bent swords and spears) and the curve feels and looks right.

This is just a solid figure for collectors and fans of Loki and a great adaptation of a classic look.

Card/Gameplay: One of three Loki in the set, these are the only options to play in Modern with the only other figure being Dormammu and Loki from Avengers/Defenders War. At just 65 points, this is a Loki that lives up to its trickery with some interesting gameplay available due to “God of Trickery” that allows you to get two more Loki on the field for free. There’s also the use of illusions in both hiding the point value and KOing other friendly Loki. It plays well to the character in comics and his use of such a tactic. Add in its Shape Change to create more Loki and you have a clix figure that really is a great adaptation of its comic persona and feels like it’ll be a lot of fun to play.

Stock up on those Loki because this could get interesting.

Closer Look: The Mighty Thor Heroclix: Thor

Over the weekend we opened up and showed off (with some technical issues) a brick of the upcoming The Mighty Thor Heroclix set from WizKids. We’re kicking off a closer look at each of the figures we saw with some general thoughts on their gameplay and sculpt.

Up next is #1 in the set… Thor!

Sculpt: What would a set be without Thor (and there’s 5 depending how you count them in this set)!? The figure is #1 in the set kicking it off with a figure that hearkens back to his earliest of look and is about the 40th time the character has appeared in the game. This look is taken straight from the comics and is a solid translation.

While the face of the character suffers from the usual limitations of Heroclix figures, the cape, helmet, and hammer all have solid detailing to make up for it. From the bottom strap of the hammer to the winds coming off of the helmet and flow of the cape, it’s the small details that make this figure work.

The pose is a classic one and overall, while it’s not super dynamic, this is a Thor that’s a great translation of his comic depiction.

Card/Gameplay: At just 50 points this is the cheapest Thor in modern but it also has the lowest number of clicks for any Thor in modern. It’s cheap, but a lot, but also a few clicks short of others. The dial too is a bit slower and less attacks with a comparable strength and defense to others. It’s cheaper but its dial is just enough to see why. Still, this is still a pretty tough figure and has its useful.

What stands out is the Quake “Mjolnir Slam” which guarantees at least 1 damage. To get that in helps create a nice steady damage machine and for the cheap points a figure that might be a good fit for your Asgardian or Avengers team.

Closer Look: The Mighty Thor Heroclix: Flora Colossus and Sword!

Over the weekend we opened up and showed off (with some technical issues) a brick of the upcoming The Mighty Thor Heroclix set from WizKids. We’re kicking off a closer look at each of the figures we saw with some general thoughts on their gameplay and sculpt.

Up first, Flora Colossus and Sword!

Sculpt: I Am (Not Groot)! This colossul figure feels like it in the hands with a fantastically detailed miniature that’s subtlely nice. While pretty monochromatic, the Flora Colossus has some shading with the various cracks in the bark making every inch of the figure pop.

The figure has a nice amount of detail with the various branches coming out of the back and top of the head and the sunken eyes give it a very alien feel to it all. Especially nice is the figure for the most part just covering its base with only its arms and head reaching over.

The pose as well gives the impression of a slow lumbering figure chasing down it’s nemesis ready to strike. Fans of a certain tree like character will want to check this one out.

Card/Gameplay: There’s a point cost for whatever mood you’re in and if played intelligently this figure can quickly become a pain with it’s abilitiy to heal bast its starting line. With a 1/3 chance of healing one click on land and two in water, this is a character that will have to be dealt with quickly.

The retaliation is also nice allowing you to quickly go on the offensive. You have a character that can do damage to quite a few of your opponents. A solid defensive character I may slowly move towards the opponent healing while waiting to be struck and then counter attack with it. Also to be able to hit opposing characters 3 squares away will force your opponent to spread out. However, if you begin the game on the 10-point starting line, you won’t be able to attack smaller characters unless it’s through Colossal Retaliation, so what point value you go for will be a key with this one.

To also give an action token with Quake potentially helps shut down your opponents if played intelligently.

Combined with other abilities like Charge, Sidestep, Impervious, Invulnerability, Toughness, and Close Combat Expert, and you’ve got a figure that’s a potential beast when it comes to the attack.

Deciding what your starting click is to maximize abilities/stats and points will be key with this one.

Sculpt: It’s a sword in a rock…. The miniature is a decent one and I can see modeling enthusiasts going for it for other projects. The rock itself is decent and looks less like mud/poo than this picture shows off. The sword itself lacks a lot of detail though.

Card/Gameplay: For four points you can give someone blades/claws/fangs… Could be helpful in some builds though there feels like other equipment that might be better for the price.
